| St John's College v St Anne's Allstars
CC
St John's College Sportsground, Oxford, Monday 31st May 2004
Toss: St John's
Weather: Warm and sunny
Allstars debuts: GA Caldicott
Format: Time
REPORT Without Chris Hipwell it could have been a humiliation, but ultimately the margin of defeat was respectable and our performance creditable. After losing the toss on a featherbed for the third consecutive year, our bowlers were able to keep an excellent John's batting line-up reasonably in check for most of what proved to be a 47 over innings. Tom Morris and the superb Paul Nicol were the pick of our attack, and after 35 overs the home side had reached just 117-3. But their wickets in hand proved crucial, providing the platform for Quentin Williams to move up through the gears in the last thirty minutes. After a slow start, his unbeaten 70 came eventually from just 90 balls, with the spinners bearing the brunt of his leg-side assault.
215 was by no means a disgraceful total to concede, but a difficult one to chase down in the time left available. And an almost impossible one after both Tristan and Mozza were out for ducks inside three overs. Nicol and Kieran Toohey began to rebuild, but both ultimately succumbed to the brilliance of leg spinner Seth Turner - the man who torments us every year in this fixture and whose Phd, we hope, is now very close to completion. A sub-100 total beckoned, but not before Hipwell had his say. In what most observers agreed was his finest ever innings for the Allstars, Victoria's finest unleashed an awe-inspiring counter-attack hewn from real courage, vision and skill. Driving, cutting and pulling with power and precision, and virtually chanceless, his 94 not out encompased just 82 balls and comprised 9 fours and 5 sixes. Sadly, to get a result you need someone like him at both ends - and despite debutant Grant Caldicott's brave 21 ball vigil, the tail were not quite up to the task of repelling the John's spinners.
